My Poor Baby

Kian most likely has RSV. He is very sick... very rattly breathing with wheezing. He's miserable with an ear infection (prob sinusitis too) and teething on top of it. I spent the night in the hospital with him after taking him to the ER. I came home post-ER, a fever came on and his breathing was labored again, so I went back for overnight monitoring. It was hard watching him, and knowing there was nothing anybody could do except hope for no serious complications.

I'm too tired to write more... like about the dietitian visit that really angered me, how I was left there until 4pm for no clear reasons, and I don't even know what else. Kian is asleep now, and I'm going to go sleep in the room with him... listen to his wheezing that will reassure me that he is breathing at least. He should be ok, but it is scary. RSV is no joke.

Disgusting

This may be old news, but I just learned about it... and find it totally disgusting! Can you guess what I was researching online? Ah, mommyhood!

Ready for Food

Kian is definitely getting ready to eat food. Here he's swiping at some bacon! Very appropriately, he's wearing an "I love bacon" onesie that a friend had embroidered for him. (New pictures posted.) We had a great bacon pancake fest with friends, and Kian wanted in on some of the action.

In general, Kian wants some of everything we are eating or drinking. If we have a glass of water (or a beer bottle), he tries to grab it. It's gotten to the point where I give him sips of my water (no beer for you!), and he really enjoys that experience. He's even gotten licks of banana and avocado as well. One of my aunt's gave him a taste of a cookie with chocolate (Digestives) while we were in London (when I wasn't watching!), and he was all over that. We'll have those pictures up soon, and you can see the chocolate smeared all over his face. Happily, he didn't cry when I took it from him, as I really didn't want him having chocolate... supposedly introducing foods too early can bring on allergies, and I definitely don't want him allergic to chocolate. That would be tragic! Overall, this kid is ready for food!

The current recommendation is to wait until a baby is six months old to introduce food (a change from the old 4-6 month range), but I've been thinking... if my baby is TELLING me that he is ready, I think he's ready. Rob and I went a great "First Foods" seminar with Ann Kepler (who runs my mom's group), and I think we're ready to go for food. I went to a special nursing doctor this morning (my nursing issues continue!), and she suggested meat as a great first food for its zinc and iron properties. As such, I'm thinking avocado, sweet potato, and then chicken or beef. His high chair should arrive tomorrow - very exciting!

On Our Own

Rob just left for his first traveling project since Kian was born. I was a grump this weekend just thinking about the prospect... then again, all three of us being sick, Kian big time teething, lack of sleep, and a really rough return week may have had something to do with it too. I shed a tear when Rob left... but mainly because Kian gave him a big toothless grin as he was leaving. It made me sad that they have to be apart at all, but I suppose all jobs call parents away from their kiddos. I know Rob will miss him. I hope Kian's tooth waits to come until Rob returns... then again, I hope the tooth REALLY takes it's time. I'm really scared of Kian biting me, especially as he is already doing so to relieve gum pain. Some of his bites hurt toothless even!

I'm sitting here... thinking about how this week will go without Rob. When will I shower? I guess I've got to be brave and go while Kian is sleeping (wish he did so more reliably!). Water while I'm nursing at night? His company in the evening... these will be lonely times, I'm sure. Fortunately, I have a rather action-packed week ahead of me. Well, not too action packed, as I don't want to exhaust Kian and myself, especially as we are both finally getting rid of this nasty cold.

Guess I get a little taste of being a single mom now... only a MUCH easier version! Thank goodness! Since Kian was born, all I've done is think about how single parents do it. It's hard!
